Appcast Releases 2026 U.K. Benchmark Report as Labour Market Softens and Hiring Costs Fall

London — Appcast has published its fourth annual U.K. Recruitment Marketing Benchmark Report, highlighting how a cooling labour market is reshaping hiring performance, candidate behaviour, and recruitment costs across the country.

The report, based on analysis of 3.6 million job ad clicks and 880,000 applications from more than 190 U.K. employers, provides data-driven insights to help talent acquisition leaders adapt to evolving market conditions.

Softer Labour Market Shifts Employer–Candidate Dynamics

According to the findings, the U.K. labour market weakened significantly in 2025, with payroll employment declining by more than 100,000 jobs and unemployment rising to 5.2%. As a result, candidate availability increased while hiring demand moderated across sectors.

This shift has altered the balance of power in recruitment, creating new efficiencies for employers while intensifying competition among job seekers.

Recruitment Costs Decline as Candidate Supply Grows

One of the report’s key takeaways is the decline in recruitment advertising costs:

  • Cost-per-click (CPC) and cost-per-application (CPA) decreased or stabilized year-over-year
  • Increased candidate supply contributed to improved cost efficiency
  • Apply rates rose steadily, reaching over 5% by the end of 2025

These trends indicate that employers can achieve stronger results with lower investment—provided strategies are aligned with current market conditions.

Role and Regional Disparities Persist

Despite overall cost improvements, performance varies significantly across job types and regions:

  • White-collar roles remain among the most expensive to fill
  • Gig and low-barrier roles deliver the highest apply rates and lowest CPAs
  • Regional apply rates range from 4.43% to 7.17%
  • London records the strongest performance, while Northern Ireland remains more challenging

These disparities highlight the need for localized and role-specific recruitment strategies.

Job Ad Optimization Remains Critical

The report emphasizes that job ad quality continues to play a major role in recruitment success. Higher conversion rates are associated with:

  • Shorter, clearer job titles
  • Early-week job postings
  • Mobile-friendly application experiences
  • Application processes completed in five minutes or less

Additionally, Appcast introduced new candidate disposition benchmarks, offering deeper insight into post-application conversion metrics.

Strategic Implications for Employers

“For employers still hiring, this environment presents meaningful advantages,” said Roy Jaques. “Lower advertising costs and greater candidate availability can drive efficiency—but only if strategies evolve alongside the market.”

The report concludes that success in 2026 will depend on:

  • Aligning recruitment budgets with current market realities
  • Adapting to changing candidate behaviour
  • Leveraging data-driven insights to optimize performance

Navigating a Changing Recruitment Landscape

As economic pressures continue to influence hiring demand, the findings underscore a shift toward more strategic, analytics-driven recruitment marketing.

For employers willing to adjust their approach, the current environment offers an opportunity to improve hiring outcomes while controlling costs—marking a significant transition in how organizations compete for talent in the U.K. market.
